- ➤ Three-year-old Caleb Seidl, who is battling leukemia, got a surprise visit from Kraken player John Hayden at Fly Trampoline Park in Anchorage—he also learned that Make-A-Wish Alaska arranged for his family to fly to Seattle this fall to see a Kraken game. Alaska's News Source
- ➤ Anchorage will host a busy weekend with an outdoor concert Friday at 6 p.m. at Alaska Airlines Center Parking Lot—followed by a free Fly-By Festival Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Alaska Aviation Museum and a pride parade Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Delaney Park Strip. Other events include a cosplay day at Fairview Recreation Center, a summer fest at Brown Bear Saloon, a safety fair with a fire truck tour, a co-ed bike ride at Kincaid Park, a dog show, a neighborhood greenways ride, a market in Eagle River, a summer outdoor market, and a game show on Sunday. - ➤ A woman alleged to have driven under the influence hit and killed a cyclist on June 19 after leaving an Anchorage restaurant—she reportedly offered a bribe to an officer, posted a $10,000 bail, and missed her court hearing on Thursday as prosecutors charged her with manslaughter, bribery, DUI, and refusal to submit to a chemical test. - ➤ St. Olga of Kwethluk was canonized on June 19 as the first female Orthodox saint from North America and is remembered for her devoted care of her community in Kwethluk. - ➤ Members of the Native Village of Eklutna unveiled a new Indigenous sign at Glen Alps Trailhead on Flattop Mountain on Wednesday night, renaming Tanaina Peak to Qin Chegi (ridge where we cry) to honor Dena’ina heritage. - ➤ Governor Mike Dunleavy vetoed House Bill 174 that would have expanded funds for Mt. Edgecumbe High School and rural teacher housing by removing the $70 million cap on repair and maintenance grants—a change that would shift scarce state dollars to local housing costs.
