Good morning, Anchorage. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 26th of June.

CRIME NEWS

  • On June 19, a Mazda SUV hit bicyclist Radahámez Rodriguez Pérez on C Street near 64th Avenue while he was talking with his mother, and the driver Stephanie Dill—who was speeding and appeared intoxicated—reportedly tried to bribe officers with $1,000 and now faces charges including manslaughter, DUI, reckless driving, bribery, and refusing a chemical test.  Alaska's News Source
  • Anchorage police are seeking Robert Thomas Miller, 42, who allegedly crashed a blue Dodge Ram into the Anchorage Pel'meni restaurant on April 20, causing over $200,000 in damages and severe injuries including one employee who underwent multiple surgeries — investigators noted skid marks, high speeds, and drug evidence — while the restaurant now serves customers from a nearby tent until repairs are complete.  Alaska Public Media
  • A 30-year-old man who left a residential reentry center on Wednesday at 8 a.m. without authorization is now wanted on a felony warrant, and police say he was previously convicted in a 2022 assault case that originally included charges of attempted murder and was last seen wearing a black shirt, black pants, a gray beanie and carrying a white bag.  Alaska's News Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Senate unanimously approved a bill on June 18 to resume the federal Secure Rural Schools program that gave millions to small Alaska schools until it ended in 2024 — the House has yet to pass the legislation.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Anchorage officials said state-managed roads have lagged in safety since eight pedestrians and one cyclist were fatally struck this year including 79-year-old Gladys Graf who died when a cab hit her while she crossed West Benson Boulevard early in June, and the Assembly pressed for quicker fixes such as lower speed limits and better lighting—federal funding rules and construction delays have slowed these measures.  Anchorage Daily News
  • The U.S. Missile Defense Agency and Boeing announced that a new long-range radar successfully tested on Monday in Alaska will improve the system’s ability to detect incoming missiles for the decades-old Ground-based Midcourse Defense program; Senator Dan Sullivan said on Tuesday that the test went flawlessly — confirming faster response times and extended sensor range. The upgrade will strengthen national defenses by enhancing the protection provided to key regions across the country.  Alaska's News Source
  • On Tuesday, more than 60 Anchorage residents testified at an Assembly meeting about a proposed rule that would make camping in public a crime—opponents, nearly twice as many as supporters, said the fines would hurt homeless people. Mayor LaFrance presented a narrower version banning camping near playgrounds and trails that may be voted on at a special meeting on July 11.  Alaska Public Media
  • Ryan McKee urged support for the App Store Accountability Act — a proposed law that will let parents approve or reject app downloads to protect children from harmful content online.
