ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A freight train headed north struck an ATV Monday evening near Montana Creek at Mile 205.5, leaving a man dead as troopers investigate+railroad officials confirmed that the right-of-way remains closed to the public.  Alaska Public Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UAA kicked off summer today by hosting its Concert in the Quad event—students gathered on campus to enjoy live music and celebrate the change in season. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rain slowed wildfire spread overnight but fires still threatened neighborhoods in Healy, Tok, and Fairbanks as the Bear Creek Fire burned several homes and outbuildings. Firefighters gained ground and over 100 residents were evacuated while state and federal crews arrived—more fires may start later as thunderstorms approach.  Alaska Public Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Due to delayed federal funds, the North Pacific Fishery Management Council canceled travel and will hold its October meeting online as it scales back operations. The council expects another installment once Congress finalizes the spending plan — future plans such as a potential December in-person meeting depend on additional funding.  Alaska Public Media
  • Rachel Lord and Bobbi Mixom say the Senate reconciliation bill may hurt Alaska’s food systems by cutting support for small farms and nutrition programs when food costs are high.
