CRIME NEWS

  • Federal investigators say drug traffickers are targeting Alaska as three Juneau residents allegedly planned a meth and money laundering scheme while two men from Vegas and a Kenai resident face drug charges—U.S. Attorney Michael J. Heyman said law enforcement is working with state troopers to stop the flow of dangerous drugs.  Must Read Alaska

CULTURE NEWS

  • Matushka Olga, a beloved Yup’ik midwife from Kwethluk, was canonized as Saint Olga on June 19 and 20—an event that drew hundreds of pilgrims and high-ranking Orthodox bishops. The ceremony featured a boat procession on the Kuskokwim River—and spurred plans to build a new church and hostel to welcome future visitors.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Downtown Anchorage is hosting the Summer Solstice Festival where thousands, including local residents, tourists, and visitors from nearby communities, will enjoy three blocked streets with over 60 vendors and free live music and dance performances. EDUCATION NEWS

  • State Representative Kevin McCabe (District 30) argued that Alaska’s public schools count students for cash rather than learning, a system that wastes funds on bloated administration. Governor Dunleavy’s June 12 veto, which saved $50.6 million, underscored the need to shift resources from bureaucracy to classrooms.  Must Read Alaska

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Denali Borough updated evacuation statuses for the Bear Creek Fire as of 1 p.m. Saturday, with residents in 'go' zones needing to evacuate, those in 'set' zones preparing to leave, and those in 'ready' zones advised to monitor their belongings. Helicopters and air tankers dropped water and retardant on the fire while an evacuation point stayed available at Tri-Valley Community Center + officials continue to update guidelines online.  Alaska's News Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Friday, the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing about ICE detainees housed at the Anchorage Correctional Complex after it took in 41 immigration detainees from Tacoma due to overcrowding. DOC Commissioner Jen Winkelman said there were bumps in the road with the high number of detainees—lawmakers and advocates questioned the detainees’ access to legal counsel and basic services while asking if the state could be held liable.  Anchorage Daily News
  • On May 2, the Alaska Supreme Court said it was wrong to force Lila to get her head shaved during a 72-hour hold—she had spent six days in jail and the state did not show this was the least restrictive treatment for her head lice.  Must Read Alaska

  • At the Anchorage Mayor’s Marathon on Saturday, June 21, 2025, Lower 48 runner Nic Maszk won the men’s full marathon in 2:32:42 — finishing 18 seconds ahead of local runner Preston Wethington. In the women’s race, Lower 48 runner Rebecca McCormick finished in 3:08:04 — leading by nine minutes over Steph Steeves while local Alison Matthews placed third.  Anchorage Daily News
