ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • AFD responded last Friday to a car crash on Gambell Street that led to near-collisions—drivers did not give emergency vehicles enough space—and the department warns that such carelessness can delay responses and increase equipment repair times.  Alaska's News Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Anchorage’s Lucky Wishbone won the James Beard America’s Classic award at the 2025 James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards in Chicago, making it the first restaurant in Alaska to earn the national honor. Owners traveled to Chicago to accept the award and marked the milestone for the diner that has been serving quality food since 1955.  Your Alaska Link

  • Mat-Su students won 3rd place in the Ninth Circuit Civics Contest on June 17 at 10:35 a.m.—they competed against teams from across the circuit to demonstrate their civic knowledge.  Alaska's News Source
  • Alaska school districts are hiring new teachers from the Philippines to help fill a teacher shortage. This move continues a long history of Filipino contributions that began when Filipino sailors first visited Alaska in 1788—starting a legacy of growth and community.  The Alaska Current

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • New research in Marine Mammal Science linked a harmful algal bloom to the death of ten fur seals and hundreds of fish that washed up on a Pribilof beach last summer. Tribal staff on St. Paul Island recovered the seals and said warming oceans have increased the toxin saxitoxin—an agent that stops nerve signals—although the upcoming fur seal harvest remains safe.  Alaska Public Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Mike Dunleavy vetoed Senate Bill 183—legislators say the measure would have forced the executive branch to give clear oil and gas tax audit reports. Lawmakers plan to vote on an override in January to push for better transparency that may recover billions in missed tax revenue.  Alaska's News Source
  • Gov. Dunleavy vetoed a bipartisan bill meant to improve oversight of oil tax revenue by requiring the Department of Revenue to provide clear data to the Legislature’s auditor. Lawmakers said the veto blocks access to vital information and may be overridden with a two-thirds vote when the Legislature returns in January—raising questions about transparency.  KTOO

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Alaska Department of Health reported that from 2017 to 2023, over half of fatal overdoses involved methamphetamine—mostly used along with opioids rather than on its own. Emergency responders are urged to closely monitor patients treated with naloxone since the combined drug effects can lead to ongoing heart and breathing issues.  Anchorage Daily News
