CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Kayden McIntosh, who pleaded guilty for the 2019 shooting death of 19-year-old Cynthia Hoffman near Thunderbird Falls, appeared in court on Monday to confirm that his sentencing is scheduled for August 25—defense must submit expert witness findings by July 25 to help the state prepare while family members seek closure. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Eleven new legislators joined the Alaska Legislature this year and six of them shared reflections on their first session, noting challenges with education funding and personal sacrifices while working as a bipartisan team. They pointed to progress on overriding Gov. Dunleavy’s veto of a school aid increase — a key step they plan to build on in future sessions. Alaska Beacon
- ➤ Gov. Dunleavy vetoed the bipartisan bill that would have required the Department of Revenue to provide usable oil tax data—he said the measure was an unconstitutional delegation of legislative power. Lawmakers plan to override the veto with a two-thirds vote in January to improve oversight of falling tax revenue. KBRW
- ➤ Alaska could receive up to $12.2 million over the next 15 years from a $7.4 billion opioid settlement with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family, Attorney General Treg Taylor said—most funds will go in the next three years to support prevention, treatment and recovery programs—and a court hearing on the settlement is expected soon. - ➤ A federal appeals court upheld the Biden administration’s approval of ConocoPhillips’ Willow oil project on the North Slope despite a minor review flaw, allowing the project to continue as planned. Environmental and Native plaintiffs argued the review did not fully address climate and local impacts + the project is set to produce up to 180,000 barrels per day with first oil expected in 2029. - ➤ A 69-year-old Wisconsin man—Daniel Winkelman—will begin riding his motorcycle on Friday for a 3,800-mile trip to Anchorage to raise $1.2M for pancreatic cancer clinical trials. He plans to ride 320 miles a day with his son in a follow vehicle and aims to complete the journey by July 10th. Alaska's News Source
