CRIME NEWS

  • A 27-year-old man was arrested for murdering 25-year-old Michael Kaskey after police responded last week to a reported stabbing on the 3800 block of Spenard Road—he also faces charges for tampering with evidence.  Your Alaska Link

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Alaska Permanent Fund reached an all-time high of $83.5B after a rebound from a $2.2B loss in April, according to a spokesperson for the fund. A $3.8B transfer will go to the state treasury on July 1 — final audited numbers will be released in September.  Anchorage Daily News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Nonprofit American Rivers — which supports watersheds nationwide — released its list of endangered rivers on Earth Day and named the Susitna River the 8th-most endangered river in the country.  Alaska's News Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Yesterday, Anchorage Assembly directed more than $2.4 million from state funds to MASH Property Management LLC to set up 100 beds at the Alex Hotel and Suites for non-congregate shelter — a move aimed at easing homelessness — and discussed further measures including an ordinance to criminalize prohibited camping. The assembly's actions are part of a broader effort to address a worsening homelessness crisis.  Alaska's News Source
  • The Alaska Department of Natural Resources is holding its annual land auction and 204 parcels are now available for sale to help increase land ownership among residents. The sealed bidding will close Oct 1 and high bids will be announced Oct 22—veterans receive a 25% discount.  Alaska's News Source
  • NOAA Fisheries in Alaska has lost many employees—28 from its regional office and 51 from its Fisheries Science Center—which has reduced fish surveys and data analysis needed for managing seafood harvests. Agency officials warned that the cuts will delay modernization projects and affect future fishery management.  Anchorage Daily News
  • The Vision Zero task force released a six-month report on efforts to curb pedestrian deaths in Anchorage, noting that in 2024 there were 15 deaths and in 2025 eight fatalities have occurred, including a June 2 incident that killed a 79-year-old woman near Benson and C Street. The report outlines plans to analyze data from winter and spring, evaluate speed studies on key corridors, and test the Rest on Red pilot project—steps aimed at further improving pedestrian safety.  Alaska's News Source
