COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Yesterday, over 5,300 runners and 1,200 virtual participants gathered at UAA for the 33rd Alaska Run For Women amid rain—raising funds for breast cancer research—and celebrating survivors like Mackenzie Carpenter, whose journey of battling cancer inspires local hope—making the event a strong community success.  Anchorage Daily News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fatal helicopter crash on the remote North Slope on June 4 killed Shiloh Schulte, a shorebird biologist from Maine, and Jonathan Guibas, a veteran pilot recently hired by a Wasilla aviation firm—rescue teams located the wreckage about 25 to 30 miles southwest of Deadhorse and an investigation is underway.  Must Read Alaska

CULTURE NEWS

  • Indigenous Critical Reflections on Traditional Ecological Knowledge is a new book that brings together essays from scholars and Indigenous voices to show how traditional ways of knowing work with modern science. The book grew out of a 2022 summit and includes contributions from Alaska, and will help academics, students and tribal leaders learn more about enduring ideas (the work of generations passing down vital knowledge).  Anchorage Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Alaska prosecutors are charging 11 Whittier residents born in American Samoa with felony vote fraud for falsely claiming U.S. citizenship on voter registration forms—state officials later clarified that American Samoans are U.S. nationals not automatically allowed to vote in federal elections. Similar issues have been seen in Oregon and Hawaii as confusion over birthright citizenship continues.  Anchorage Daily News
  • On June 3, 2025, residents lined up at the Division of Public Assistance office at University Center Mall in Anchorage and waited over 90 minutes as few case workers were available—experts warn the heavy backlog and new work checks for SNAP and Medicaid could worsen the delays. State officials said they added more staff to help vulnerable clients—though delays persist after the office reopened following a long COVID closure.  Anchorage Daily News

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Summer travel deals offer discounted airfares and cruise options for Alaskans as Delta’s seasonal nonstops from Fairbanks provide round-trip basic economy fares at $218 starting July 6—while discounted flights from Anchorage to Frankfurt and low-priced cruises departing from Whittier add more choices. Travelers should note that basic fares do not include advance seat assignments and that wildfire-related closures may affect road trips on the Alaska Highway.  Anchorage Daily News
