COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City crews planted more than 8,000 flowers in Town Square, drawing visitors with their vibrant display. Nina Bonito Romine, co-owner of The Kobuk next door, said the blooms bring positive energy to the park.  Alaska's News Source

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • National Park Service rangers recovered the body of 41-year-old Alex Chiu from Denali after he fell 3,000 feet while descending with his expedition—he set out on Monday and his fall occurred near the West Buttress.  KTOO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • An 8th grader from Romig Middle School won the National Civics Bee state final at Bear Tooth Theatrepub on June 5, where students answered questions about U.S. government and history. She will compete for the national championship in November in Washington, D.C.  Alaska's News Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Anchorage mom Valerie Reeves is urging lawmakers to pass the Joshua Smith Snowmachine Safety Act after her 7-year-old son died in a late-night snowmachine crash while wearing an improperly sized helmet — the act will require properly fitting helmets, set age limits, and mandate safety training in rural areas.  Your Alaska Link
  • Gavel Alaska broadcast Gov. Mike Dunleavy's news conference after his second veto of an education funding bill on May 19. The team of eight from KTOO in Juneau has provided nearly 30 years of live government coverage — including committee hearings and emergency updates — to show Alaskans their officials at work.  Alaska Beacon
  • A federal judge in New York issued a temporary restraining order on Wednesday that stops the planned shutdown of the Palmer Job Corps Center so that its 160 students can continue classes— a hearing is set for June 17 to review the case.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Kevin Pendergast—a UAA graduate with oil, gas, and mining experience—was named the new director of the BLM Alaska office and will start on June 29. He will manage over 70 million acres of surface land and 220 million acres of subsurface estate as he leads efforts on resource development and public projects.  Must Read Alaska

  • The 2025 Special Olympics Alaska Summer Games will begin today in Anchorage with an opening ceremony at West High School at 6 p.m. and competitions running through Sunday at Dimond High School with over 140 athletes competing.
