COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rocket Fuel Summer Food Program is launching an initiative to feed children through the summer in Anchorage, serving lunches including oranges, veggie chips, ham and cheese sandwiches, and chocolate milk at local centers — Spenard, Fairview, Mountain View, and a soon-to-open site at Muldoon. The program will run every weekday from 1 to 3 p.m. to meet rising demand after serving 600 students last school year.  Your Alaska Link

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Anchorage police said a pedestrian was critically injured at about 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Benson Boulevard and C Street intersection—while a female pedestrian was hit by a hit-and-run driver at about 3 a.m. Saturday near the Seward Highway intersection and sustained life-threatening injuries.  Alaska Public Media
  • A female pedestrian died in a collision with a vehicle on Benson Boulevard at the C Street intersection late Monday morning (lanes were briefly closed) (in midtown Anchorage).  Alaska's News Source
  • A 20-year-old passenger died — and the driver was arrested for DUI, no valid operator’s license, and manslaughter — after a rollover crash occurred near Mile 92.5 on Seward Highway early Saturday when responders arrived at 3:53 a.m.  Alaska's News Source

CRIME NEWS

  • FBI dive teams searched Cheney Lake for a weapon linked to a 2024 case—Anchorage Police said parts of the lake remain blocked off while law enforcement will be in the area for 2-4 days.  Alaska's News Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Downtown Anchorage hosts free live music—Fridays on Fourth offers concerts every Friday from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. at Peratrovich Park until August 1 while Jazz in the Park holds Saturday shows from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the park until August 16.  Your Alaska Link

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Alaska schools are hiring teachers from the Philippines to ease a growing shortage, with Kodiak Island Borough School District leading a direct recruitment effort (spending about $28,000 on a recruiting trip and additional visa fees) instead of relying on expensive agencies. Local officials and the Alaska Council of School Administrators are joining in to screen hundreds of candidates while districts plan to bring in more well-trained educators for upcoming school terms.  KTOO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Don Young Alaska Job Corps Center in Palmer will close by the end of June after an operations pause by the U.S. Department of Labor due to rising costs—staff and students will begin returning home next week. Local officials and representatives plan legal action to challenge the shutdown that affects 160 students and 111 workers.  Alaska Public Media
