  • Merrill Field Airport celebrated its 95th birthday on Saturday with an Aviation Celebration—offering Anchorage residents a close look at rare aircraft, flybys and exhibits.   • Mat-Su Microgreens in Palmer supplies restaurants in Anchorage and Girdwood with locally grown microgreens that enhance dishes like spruce-tipped salmon ceviche—Ken Hoffman and his wife Alexandria began growing these nutrient-rich greens in 2022 and are now expanding distribution after a recent USDA audit to meet growing demand.  Must Read Alaska

CRIME NEWS

  • Corey Potter, a Kodiak fisher, pleaded guilty in Anchorage to illegally shipping thousands of pounds of tanner crab infected with Bitter Crab Syndrome from Southeast Alaska to Washington and was sentenced to one year in jail with two years on supervised release — a restitution hearing is set for July 15.  Alaska Beacon

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Alaska Attorney General Treg Taylor joined a bipartisan coalition of 28 state attorneys general to demand urgent answers from Meta Platforms over concerns that Meta AI may expose children to sexually explicit content—reports indicate the chatbot risked simulated grooming behavior. The group asked if safeguards were removed and if these features are still active on Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp—responses are expected by June 10.  Must Read Alaska
  • Anchorage officials said they will clear the Davis Park homeless encampment on June 17 because safety concerns have grown from past issues with crime, drug use, and trash; previous abatements pushed displaced individuals to other areas. The city is also planning a vehicle-based homeless site in South Anchorage near Target and Cabela’s to offer shelter and social services—despite little public input—raising concerns among local residents.  Must Read Alaska
  • Over Memorial Day weekend from May 24 to 28, teams from the Alaska National Guard, US Army, Civil Air Patrol and state troopers rescued 10 people in six emergency missions, with one incident involving a capsized ATV near the Knik River that injured one person and required immediate airlift to a local hospital (Mat-Su Regional Medical Center).  Must Read Alaska

  • North Pole adaptive athlete Kooper Matteson set a new personal best of *4 feet, 9 inches* at the state track and field meet on May 30 at Dimond High, and his coach praised his role as the first adaptive athlete at North Pole High.
