Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 30th of May.
Good morning, Anchorage.
Alaska State Troopers recovered the remains of three bodies from a boat at the bottom of Kachemak Bay nearly 10 months after a family from Texas disappeared — investigators are assessing the scene.
A federal judge ruled Thursday that Anchorage defense attorney Justin Facey (44) accused of working with a Mexican drug cartel and facing charges (drug trafficking and firearms possession) will remain in jail while his lawyer works with U.S. probation to secure inpatient treatment ahead of a delayed trial.
Gas prices in Anchorage dropped as of May 29 when the average price for regular gasoline fell from $4.25 to $3.58—down 67 cents, or nearly a 20% decrease from last year.
The decline follows a national trend and is expected to remain steady as summer approaches.
After failing a federal equity test on May 16, the state education department is evaluating its options—including an appeal—to keep $81M in Impact Aid funding for school districts.
If the appeal fails, local lawmakers may have to find extra money for schools amid a tight state budget.
Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance and the Assembly are proposing changes to site access rules to simplify requirements for driveways, sidewalks and parking areas—steps they say will ease housing development delays.
The proposal, which will be reviewed at a June 10 public testimony meeting, is part of a plan to add 10,000 new housing units and fix outdated building codes.
Anchorage is planning a two-year pilot project called the Microunit Recovery Program — it will build 24 tiny recovery residences on city land to offer 80 to 100 square feet living spaces with shared bathrooms and on-site support for people experiencing homelessness and substance use issues. The program, inspired by a church tiny homes model and improved with larger units and better guest screening, will be reviewed by the Assembly on June 10 and may start construction later this summer with units opening by October.
