- ➤ University of Alaska President Pat Pitney warned that staff cuts might be necessary as millions of dollars in federal grant funds were frozen or discontinued—university officials said they would take action only if funds remain unavailable while working to lessen the impact on students and programs. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Scientists continue to monitor Mount Spurr as activity declines but warn that an eruption could bring increased earthquakes and deformed ground. Local experts advise homeowners to turn off combustion heating systems, remove outer layers at the door, and check air intakes—using space heaters and wet cleaning methods—to limit ash entering homes if an eruption occurs. - ➤ On May 21, Alaska’s House passed a bill to remove payday loan exemptions—capping fees at a 36% APR for loans of $25,000 or less—and the measure will be sent to Gov. Dunleavy, who has 20 days to sign or veto it. Alaska Public Media
- ➤ Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth directed a department-wide review to assess support for military-connected families who homeschool their children and to explore new resources for homeschooled students.
