COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Anchorage Animal Care and Control is seeking adoptive pet parents and foster homes after a hoarding incident brought 71 dogs into a shelter built for 60 to 65 animals. A community outreach manager said 17 adoptions had already occurred by Friday and the shelter remains open today for more adoptions — help is needed to give the animals proper space and care.  Alaska's News Source
  • Anchorage Animal Care and Control is urgently seeking adoptive homes for local animals as warm Memorial Day weekend weather brought a 63° high on Saturday. In Eagle River, friends and family held a candlelight vigil at Sleepy Dog Coffee Shop for missing Tony Kronos—who disappeared on March 6—to honor his memory.  Alaska's News Source
  • Over 100 volunteers cleaned the headstones of veterans at Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery on Saturday during Memorial Day weekend. American Legion Jack Henry Post 1—partnered with NuVision Credit Union—expanded the cleaning to include veterans beyond the designated tract.  Alaska's News Source
  • Volunteers cleaned hundreds of headstones at Memorial Park Cemetery over Memorial Day weekend and a vigil was held in Eagle River for missing Tony Kronos, who disappeared on March 6. A new bicycle path honoring longtime bike enthusiast Matt Glover will open soon to connect North Pole and Fairbanks — offering safer rides along Richardson Highway.  Alaska's News Source

  • A review of Cassidy Randall’s book 'Thirty Below' explains how a team called the Denali Damsels, six women who climbed Denali in 1970, overcame unfair treatment and harsh weather.   • The Anchorage Assembly passed Ordinance AO 2025-61 this week making it a misdemeanor to start fires on public or private land during fire season—officials say the law targets dangerous fires from vagrant encampments that risk urban wildlands.  Must Read Alaska
  • EPA’s draft plan, sent to the White House on May 2, aims to remove limits on greenhouse gas emissions from coal and gas-fired power plants and may weaken Alaska’s carbon credit market by lowering demand for carbon storage. Gov. Dunleavy’s Sustainable Energy Conference in June—expected to include remarks from EPA and federal officials—will focus on how the proposal could impact state carbon plans.  Must Read Alaska

  • At Dimond High, teammates Nevaeh Watkins and Sarah Dittman defended their titles at the Region IV track meet held on May 23 and 24 as Watkins cleared 5'8 in the high jump and Dittman broke her long jump record—boosting hopes for state next week.
