- ➤ Anchorage Library held its annual Reading Rendezvous today outside its building with more than 40 vendor booths, live entertainment and food trucks as part of its Summer Discovery Program to help prevent summer learning loss. - ➤ A report shows that planned oil drilling in Western Alaska may hurt the near-threatened Yellow-Billed Loon and other wildlife. The Wilderness Society’s research (noting changes in water levels and more development) warns that cumulative impacts from boosting drilling could push the species closer to endangerment while federal orders aim to open up the region. - ➤ The final state budget draft has no new funding for many services as flat funding—combined with inflation—forces legislators to cut programs including at the University of Alaska and in public safety and road maintenance. - ➤ The Alaska Department of Law filed a hearing request to challenge a May 12 ruling that found the Department of Fish and Game acted in bad faith by adopting an emergency regulation for bear removal to protect the declining Mulchatna caribou herd. State officials, including Attorney General Treg Taylor and Commissioner Doug Vincent-Lang, argue the measure was lawful and effective — they plan to present additional evidence at the pending hearing.
