CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Anchorage police officers were cleared by state prosecutors after their fatal shooting of 41-year-old Puipuia Lipoi Alaelua was ruled justified when he barricaded himself in a room at the Hampton Inn with a woman and four children on Feb. 21—prosecutors said he threatened officers with a gun. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ House Bill 57 would raise funding by $700 per student and sits on Governor Dunleavy’s desk as the legislative session ends next week. The bill passed both the House and Senate & its outcome will affect schools facing rising costs, staff shortages, and outdated funding levels. Your Alaska Link
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Firefighters started a controlled burn on Anchorage’s Hillside on May 12 to remove 35 acres of vegetation collected from a wildfire risk project between Hilltop Ski Area and the Prospect Heights Trailhead. Some smoke may be seen around Anchorage as crews work 24 hours a day for up to two weeks—residents are asked not to report the operation and to avoid closed trails in the Hilltop Singletrack Trail System. - ➤ Sen. Dan Sullivan is pushing the government to finish key fish stock surveys and enforce laws against illegal fishing to help local fishermen & to protect Alaska’s seafood industry. He supported the FISH Act, which passed a Senate committee, and pressed for quick approval of a maintenance contract for a research vessel so surveys are not delayed amid possible NOAA funding cuts. - ➤ Court documents filed Friday indicate that the federal government plans to reverse the suspension on oil and gas leases in the Arctic refuge by issuing a record of decision on 2020 leases—this may let the state-owned investment bank start oil exploration work soon. Federal attorneys asked the court to pause legal proceedings until Sept.30 as environmental and Alaska Native groups push for a prompt trial. Alaska Public Media

- ➤ Dan Seavey, the inaugural Iditarod musher who donated his prize money to help keep the race going, died last week at age 87—his career spanned over 50 years. He helped shape the race and is remembered by fans and family alike—his legacy lives on in his descendants’ continued successes in the Iditarod. Anchorage Daily News
- ➤ Dan Seavey, a pioneer of the Iditarod who helped forge the race's route, died at 87 on May 8th. His family said he inspired Alaska mushers including his son Mitch and grandson Dallas — a memorial will be planned in Seward to honor his legacy. Alaska's News Source
