CRIME NEWS

  • Cornelius Smith—an Eagle River man—was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison followed by three years of supervised release and 120 hours of community service after trafficking 28 firearms from Alaska to Sacramento where many guns were linked to gang activity.  Your Alaska Link
  • A 24-year-old man charged with first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree murder linked to the 2021 death of 18-year-old Katelynn Shelhamer appeared in court Thursday at Nesbett Courthouse—after twice refusing transport from jail, his bail was set at $500,000.  Alaska's News Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • This weekend in Anchorage offers many events as the Anchorage Wolverines take on the Wisconsin Windigo tonight at Sullivan Arena in a playoff game that may lead to a winner-take-all match on Saturday—local shows include a student dance showcase and a ragtime-themed performance at Discovery Theatre, an Asian Culture Night at Atwood Concert Hall, a Girls on the Run 5K at Westchester Lagoon, a makers market at Atwood Center, a UAA expo with a burnout contest, a runway fundraiser at Unite Church, a murder mystery at Cyrano’s Theatre, and a free Mother’s Day celebration at the Alaska Native Heritage Center.  Anchorage Daily News

  • Anchorage welcomed its first cruise ship of the season on May 8 — marking the start of local cruise operations.  Alaska's News Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Alaska Legislature passed SB 113 to update the corporate income tax on companies making over 50% of their sales online to support education funding, and the change could bring in $25 million to $65 million each year. The bill now goes back to the Senate before Gov. Dunleavy will act by May 17 — a deadline for his decision.  Alaska Public Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • An allergy clinic in Anchorage recorded the highest birch pollen count in five years on Wednesday, with readings hitting 963 grains per cubic meter and reaching 1280 by Thursday—patients reported a marked increase in allergy symptoms. The clinic tracks pollen from two local sites and experts expect the high levels to continue into late May.  Anchorage Daily News
