EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Anchorage School District sent a letter on Wednesday saying many staff facing layoffs may keep their jobs thanks to reversed cuts, and final assignments will be announced by Thursday—district leaders explained that the new budget restores over 200 teaching positions and cancels layoff notices for about 80 roles. The district now awaits Governor Dunleavy’s decision on a funding bill to fully move forward.  Alaska's News Source
  • Anchorage GRIT, a bicycle mentorship program for middle school girls, held a 27-mile ride on Moose Loop on May 3 that built confidence and taught important riding skills — the program, which also includes mountain biking and cyclocross lessons, will finish this month with an overnight trip along the Glenn Highway to test the riders’ progress and raise funds for equipment. Local mentors and students from Begich and Wendler schools have come together to learn and grow through these challenging rides.  Anchorage Daily News
  • On Feb. 25, the Anchorage School Board passed a revised budget that depended on a planned state funding boost to restore over 200 teaching jobs and reverse program cuts, though members warned about roughly $23 million in cuts remaining this school year and next. Some board members described the funding as modest—like writing a check with uncertain funds—and noted that more stable support will be needed in the future.  Anchorage Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Congressman Nick Begich has proposed raising Alaska’s share of federal oil leasing revenues from 50% to 90% starting in 2035— a change that may help balance the state budget and strengthen the economy. The proposal is part of a budget reconciliation bill that now moves forward in Congress and could boost the Alaska Permanent Fund dividend.  Must Read Alaska
  • Gov. Dunleavy’s office warned staff not to enter the Capitol without approval until adjournment, and a key meeting on a revenue bill lacked the financial agency’s presence plus legislators said the move hindered progress on Senate Bill 113, which is expected to update online sales tax rules and generate up to $65 million a year. Lawmakers raised concerns that the policy could delay essential communications as the session nears its end.  KBRW
  • On May 7, the Alaska Senate approved a pared-down operating budget that includes a $1,000 Permanent Fund dividend and cuts to education, road maintenance, and other services—measures aimed at addressing a growing deficit from low oil prices. The proposal now goes to the House and will be negotiated further if lawmakers reject it.  Alaska Beacon
  • The Alaska Senate unanimously advanced SB 183, which mandates that agencies provide oil and gas tax data in the auditor’s requested format and imposes a penalty of up to $5,000 for noncompliance, and sent the measure to the House on January 21. Lawmakers said they pushed the bill after the Department of Revenue stopped supplying usable data around 2019—raising concerns about transparency and proper oversight.  Anchorage Daily News
