  • Food Bank of Alaska says 1 in 5 children go hungry and has started the 'May No Child Go Hungry' campaign to collect cash and food donations via the KTUU website. Donations are accepted throughout May — a push to help families in need.  Alaska's News Source
  • Alaska Public Media will host Member Appreciation Day soon for members and families to enjoy station tours, games, a light lunch, and a visit from Molly of Denali (RSVP is recommended) (non-members may join with a donation).  KBRW
  • Anchorage resident Sarah Short has launched a contest that uses a Cinco de Mayo twist to spotlight neglected roads by asking residents to post photos of potholes on Facebook with the hashtag #SinkholeDeMayoAnchorage + the post with the most likes wins $200.  Must Read Alaska
  • Nominations are open for the 27th Annual Farm Family of the Year Award, honoring hardworking Alaska families in agriculture and mariculture, with entries accepted through Friday, June 12. CULTURE NEWS

  • Fisheries biologist Tim Sands from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game appeared on PBS+Shared Planet, a four-part series that spotlighted the thriving Bristol Bay salmon fishery and the balance between humans and wildlife. The episode aired on May 4.  KBRW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The state Department of Fish and Game announced an expected commercial salmon harvest of 126 million fish, with 64 million fewer pink salmon than last year—reflecting a smaller pink run. Commercial fisheries will run from June through September while Bristol Bay is forecast to yield 32 million sockeye salmon.  Alaska Public Media

  • ASD superintendent Jharrett Bryantt told the board Tuesday night that the district asked a judge to expedite reconsideration of the injunction pausing Campbell STEM’s closure (decision expected Thursday). He said the district disputes the grant claim and awaits the judge’s guidance.  Alaska's News Source

  • A state judge heard arguments Friday to block the Department of Fish and Game from resuming a bear cull aimed at helping the Mulchatna caribou herd, planned for early May in the area between Togiak Refuge — Katmai, and he promised a speedy decision as both sides presented their cases.  Alaska Public Media
  • Local experts share practical gardening tips as Alaska Public Media offers a feature on preparing fields and backyards for spring planting. Guidance comes from farm owner Brad St. Pierre, UAF’s Heidi Rader, and Anchor Gardens’ Theresa Brown with resources for growers.  KBRW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. Murkowski held a roundtable yesterday with Interior Department officials and tribal leaders from Kipnuk and Kwigillingok in Anchorage to discuss relocation after Typhoon Halong exposed warming risks. Tribal leaders proposed a pilot project to build a safer village, with another meeting scheduled in Bethel.  KBRW
  • Sen. Dan Sullivan and Sen. Lisa Murkowski, with Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs Billy Kirkland, announced yesterday a plan to reinvigorate Operation Lady Justice, following Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons Day events.   • Mat-Su bus service may face cuts as borough managers propose $250K less funding, which could force Valley Transit to cancel Saturday service and cut commuter routes—the Assembly will vote on the proposal on May 12 at 6 p.m. in Palmer.  Anchorage Daily News
