ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A new report shows that pedestrian deaths in Anchorage spiked in 2024, reaching a total of 92 over the past ten years.  Alaska's News Source

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hilcorp ended its Yukon Flats oil exploration by drilling only one of two planned wells last summer on Indigenous-owned land and will begin demobilizing in the coming months — local tribal leaders opposed the drilling while Doyon said the test well provided data for future development opportunities.  Anchorage Daily News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Alaska Native artists in Anchorage who use fur to make jewelry say Etsy will ban many fur products starting Aug. 11 to protect animals, which they say hurts their business. Some artists plan to unite and build a new online platform so they can continue selling their art.  KTOO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Mat-Su Borough School District board will discuss a proposal allowing select faculty to carry concealed handguns at school on Wednesday, May 6 at the MSBSD Central Office in Palmer. The plan requires written applications, training, and evaluations & community members have expressed safety concerns.  Alaska's News Source
  • The University of Alaska system appointed Fairbanks attorney Matt Cooper as its new president after a closed selection process and announced his start on Aug. 3. Retiring President Pat Pitney will finish her term on May 21.  Alaska Public Media
  • A judge issued a preliminary injunction last Friday to temporarily stop the closure of Campbell STEM Elementary while parents challenge the district's process. The district will hold a public hearing on May 15 to explain its decision.  Alaska's News Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • An Alaska judge is reviewing a request by the Alaska Wildlife Alliance to stop the Department of Fish and Game from starting its bear cull this month to boost a failing caribou herd. The program was ruled unconstitutional last year (critics say it now risks local bears).  Alaska Beacon

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • One month after the Supreme Court ruling gave free-speech grounds to challenge conversion therapy bans, Anchorage’s only ordinance remains in force — legal uncertainty lingers as advocates debate if current safeguards for minors and counseling standards are enough.  Alaska's News Source

SPORTS NEWS

  • The 2026 Nenana Ice Classic ended when its tripod fell into the Tanana River on Monday, May 4, officially marking the winning time (video credited to Donny Jones).  Alaska's News Source
  • Dimond boys soccer extended its unbeaten streak to 9-0 with a 5-2 win over West as senior Derek Ortega Mora scored a hat trick, while UAA men's basketball announced guard Tarrance Warren as its first new recruit under coach Cameron Turner; the teams show a strong start to the season.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Anchorage's Landon Drumm earned a Division I football scholarship with West Virginia University after a standout season including 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns. He plans to train locally until departing and will walk the stage at graduation with former teammates later this month (for his hard work with support).  Alaska's News Source
