COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fire Departments across the country, including Anchorage, honored fallen firefighters over the weekend by ringing bells at the Alaska Fallen Firefighter memorial downtown. Fire Chief Doug Schrage said the ceremony recognized the 33 firefighters who died on duty for their sacrifice.  Alaska's News Source

  • Anchorage businesses are changing as Silva Saddle Western Wear closes after a 52-year run while Carrs-Safeway will shut on May 10 — new spots like Sakana Poke & Soiree, Mad Moose Bikes, Refuge Coffee, an expanded Fire Island Rustic Bakeshop and Abby’s Massage Studio now offer fresh options for locals.  Anchorage Daily News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Viking Lumber, the only mill able to supply the high-quality Sitka spruce for Steinway pianos, filed a lawsuit on March 6 against the Forest Service for not fulfilling promises to supply old-growth timber—jeopardizing jobs and the future of the timber industry.  Must Read Alaska

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On April 25, the Alaska House passed a bill exempting commercial fishers’ cooperative insurance pools from state insurance rules to help fishers avoid high premiums. The measure—covering pools that already serve about 840 vessels under Washington law—and now heads to the Senate.  Alaska Beacon
  • Alaska’s House approved a resolution—House Joint Resolution 9—that asks Congress to extend Affordable Care Act tax credits to prevent a 67% rate increase for 25,000 Alaskans; a Senate hearing is set for Tuesday.  Alaska Beacon

  • On May 3, local high school teams and athletes competed in soccer, softball, baseball, track, NAHL hockey and the Anchorage Salmon Run—showing strong local performances across a busy slate of contests.
