EDUCATION NEWS

  • Alaska Education Commissioner Deena Bishop sent a letter urging superintendents to contact lawmakers to support governor Dunleavy’s education policies or risk another veto of increased school funding amid ongoing local budget deficits. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Anchorage’s winter trash still clutters streets and parks — spurring local volunteers to join cleanup efforts. The Anchorage Chamber’s Citywide Cleanup begins tomorrow and runs until May 31 — with orange trash bags available at spots like Fred Meyer and the Alaska Aviation Museum near the airport while other events include a lake cleanup flotilla and an electronics recycling drive.  Anchorage Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, the Alaska House passed HB 16 by a 22-18 vote to reinstate campaign donation limits that mirror a ballot measure set for 2026. The bill would cap donations at $2,000 per candidate and $5,000 per party and now heads to the governor for review—lawmakers expect it will boost trust in the election process.  Alaska Public Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • Providence Alaska announced it will close its Crisis Recovery Center in mid-May — after losing a $1.2 million state health grant that created a projected $2 million annual shortfall — leaving Anchorage with fewer mental health options for adolescents in crisis.  Anchorage Daily News
