COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Work is underway on Chester Creek Trail near Hillstrand Pond after erosion damaged a bridge, forcing closure last week. Crews began repairs Wednesday and officials aim to reopen the trail before May 15 while advising visitors to use detours.  Your Alaska Link
  • The Amblin’ for Alzheimer’s Resource Alaska Walk will take place at Anchorage Golf Course at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 2, as families, caregivers and community supporters gather to raise funds and awareness for dementia support services.  Your Alaska Link

  • Anchorage Weekender lists community events this weekend, featuring a UAA pottery sale and art exhibits at several venues today.   • Seventeen-year-old UAA graduate Rainey Spurlock from Palmer will speak at the commencement ceremony at Alaska Airlines Center on Sunday, May 3. She is the youngest graduate on record (since 1997) and earned her communications degree with support from her grandmother Brenda.  Anchorage Daily News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Forecasters warn that heavy snowfall and strong winds will create dangerous avalanche conditions in backcountry areas from Anchorage to Seward (warning is in effect from 6 a.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Sunday). Travelers should avoid slopes steeper than 30 degrees.  Anchorage Daily News
  • The Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Protection has announced $180,000 in grants for community forestry projects—supporting streambank restoration and green infrastructure—for eligible local governments, tribal organizations, and nonprofits.
