ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Today, the NTSB is planning to remove wreckage from a plane that crashed in Nanwalek on Monday after an aborted landing due to a loose dog led to the deaths of pilot Daniel Bunker and his passenger Jenny Irene Miller—another man was flown to an Anchorage hospital with serious injuries and a helicopter will likely transport the debris to Wasilla for investigation.  Alaska's News Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Wednesday, a Microsoft engineer and Alaska Native citizen explained that AI can help preserve indigenous languages such as Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian—he said trusted AI models are needed to capture cultural details before fluent speakers become very few. EDUCATION NEWS

  • State lawmakers approved House Bill 57 on Wednesday to permanently add $700 to the per-student funding formula—this measure boosts long-term funding stability for K-12 schools and makes changes for charter schools and reading programs. The bill now goes to Gov. Mike Dunleavy, who has until May 17 to sign or veto it.  Alaska Beacon
  • Starting next fall, Anchorage students in grades 10-12 will choose career courses in fields like construction, health services, and law at all eight comprehensive high schools in the Academies of Anchorage program. The district will review and update the academies master plan after one year — including a change to the freshman class so it counts for a social studies credit — to help boost graduation rates and support the local workforce.  Alaska Public Media

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A wildfire mitigation project will start May 5 in Anchorage’s Hillside area as crews create a 200 foot wide fuel break from Hilltop Ski Area Road to Prospect Drive to reduce fire risks. The effort led by the Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Protection in partnership with the Anchorage Fire Department will close trails including Queen Bee and Janices Jive while crew Gannett Glacier thins dense vegetation — protecting homes and life.  Your Alaska Link

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new Alaska law requires bars, restaurants and liquor stores to post warnings that drinking alcohol can cause (breast and colon) cancers. The law takes effect (Aug. 1) and allows supervised alcohol service for Alaskans as young as 16.  Alaska Public Media
  • Alaska lawmakers are set to lower this year’s Permanent Fund Dividend from $1,400 to about $1,000 and cut key services such as public schools—steps taken to cover a projected budget shortfall of at least $70 million. The debate continues as legislators weigh using state savings against new taxes to address the deficit and prepare for next year’s challenges.  KTOO
  • Providence Crisis Recovery Center will close on May 16 due to the loss of a $1.2 million grant—reducing critical support for Alaska youth facing mental health crises. Rep.   • Alaska bars and liquor stores will be required to post signs warning that alcohol use increases risks of colon and breast cancers when the new law takes effect on Aug. 1.
