ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Saturday, April 25, hikers triggered an avalanche on Peak 3 in Chugach State Park that sent over 1,000 feet of snow down, and rescue teams (including volunteers) aided a 42-year-old with a leg injury; forecasters warn that warmer weather may lead to further hazards.  Anchorage Daily News
  • A skier was severely injured Saturday during the Alaska Airlines Slush Cup event at Alyeska Resort when 28-year-old William Ingrim crashed and is now in a medically-induced coma on a ventilator after neck surgery (his long-term paralysis is still a concern).  Alaska's News Source

  • A new forecast released on Monday, Apr. 27 shows Alaska’s commercial salmon harvest will drop more than one-third from 2025, and local producers brace for lower returns as the season unfolds.  Alaska's News Source

  • Supporters of Campbell STEM Elementary—the only nationally STEM-accredited school—asked a Superior Court judge Monday to block its closure, arguing the district did not give enough notice as it addresses a $90 million deficit; if the closure proceeds, officials will transfer accreditation to Klatt Elementary by lottery.  Alaska Public Media
  • Alaska lawmakers propose a three-year pilot program to offer future teachers $5,000 per year + $15,000 total in student loan repayment assistance to address the ongoing shortage in schools. The bill now advances to the Senate Finance Committee.  Your Alaska Link

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fisheries managers expect Yukon River Chinook salmon returns to stay near record lows with about 25,000 fish forecast ahead of an April meeting reviewing the seven-year fishing suspension, while researchers monitor river and ocean conditions to aid recovery.  Alaska's News Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Anchorage Assembly is holding a public hearing today on an ordinance to ban feeding wildlife and birds of prey to prevent conflicts with pets and the spread of disease; if passed, violators will face fines (between $250 and $500).  Anchorage Daily News
  • House Bill 321 cleared the Resources Committee and now heads to the Finance Committee. The bill permanently bans brown bear hunting in the McNeil Katmai corridor, which could cut guided hunting revenue by 20 to 50 hunts a year and reduce rural income + jobs.  Alaska Beacon

  • UAA men's basketball retained its top returner, Sylas Williams, who stayed after leaving the transfer portal to boost coach Cameron Turner's lineup, while Dimond boys soccer improved to a 6-0-1 record with wins on Tuesday and Friday at their home-field.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Eric Rud was named head coach of the UAA Seawolves on Monday, April 27 at the Avis Alaska Sports Complex following a national search. He brings over 20 years of experience (from Miami, St. Cloud State, and the USHL) and will promote aggressive play and off-ice development.  Anchorage Daily News
