  • Rainey Spurlock, a 17-year-old Palmer native who began college at 13, will deliver UAA's undergraduate commencement speech on May 3 as she becomes the school’s possibly youngest-ever graduate.   • A dynamic river breakup from thick snow may cause dangerous floods in vulnerable villages. State agencies + emergency managers plan River Watch missions starting early May to warn communities along the Yukon and Tanana Rivers.  Alaska's News Source

  • Anchorage Parks & Rec closed a section of the Chester Creek Trail near Hillstrand Pond on April 20 because heavy runoff damaged the paved surface. Repairs will begin next week + the trail is expected to reopen before the May 15 Bike to Work event.  Alaska's News Source

  • Travel expert Scott McMurren advises Anchorage residents to book airline tickets early and pay a bit extra for seat selection amid rising jet fuel prices and increased checked bag fees.   • Anchorage residents at South Park Estates are resisting planned evictions as owner (Shaun Debenham) proposes demolishing the park to build up to 150 townhomes.   • UAA junior Vivien Liessfeld from Germany won the GNAC indoor pentathlon title at Alaska Airlines Center on Tuesday and now aims to compete outdoors in Ellensburg on Monday and Tuesday.
