ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Early Wednesday morning, troopers said alcohol and high speeds caused a single-car crash on the Richardson Highway near Gulkana—killing 19-year-old Anthony Nelson of Tazlina and 19-year-old Nathaniel Kroto of Gakona and leaving a 21-year-old friend in a 2005 Toyota Camry uninjured.  Alaska's News Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • The grandson of Benny Benson is visiting Anchorage today before 3 p.m. at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport—police and firefighters will display Alaska state flags and host a performance of the Alaska State Flag Song to mark the event.  Your Alaska Link
  • Today at 9 a.m., more than 460 students from over 50 communities will gather at Anchorage's Alaska Airlines Center to compete in traditional subsistence events at the Native Youth Olympic Games; the three-day event is organized by the Cook Inlet Tribal Council (which also provides an arts and crafts expo and college resource fair) to help preserve Alaska Native cultures.  KBRW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Barrick Gold said Tuesday it will sell its 50% stake in the Donlin project for about $1 billion, leaving Novagold to hold 60% and billionaire investor John Paulson’s company 40%. The deal is expected to close midyear—Novagold praised Paulson’s expertise as the change will help advance the project while Barrick shifts focus to copper.  Alaska Beacon

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Four new Assembly members-Yarrow Silvers for East, Erin Baldwin Day for Midtown, Keith McCormick for South and Jared Goecker for Eagle River-Chugiak-were sworn in after the municipal election, while incumbent Daniel Volland and West Anchorage's Kameron Perez-Verdia continue to serve. Assembly chair Chris Constant was reselected and West Anchorage's Anna Brawley was named vice chair as the board braces for changes with term-limits amid a 25-percent turnout from 60,455 ballots counted.  Alaska Public Media
  • Reconstruction of two Knik River bridges—a key link for commuters between Anchorage and Mat-Su—began yesterday morning with traffic diversions in place to manage the flow.  Alaska's News Source
  • The Port of Alaska in Anchorage is beginning its largest overhaul in over 60 years with an $800 million contract for a new terminal to fix aging infrastructure and corrosion concerns—ensuring commerce continues during construction.  Alaska's News Source
  • The Alaska Senate passed Senate Bill 39 today to cap interest rates and fees for payday loans of $25,000 or less at 36% APR. The measure—approved by a 14 to 6 vote—removes an exemption for payday lenders and now moves to the House Finance Committee.  Alaska Beacon

HEALTH NEWS

  • Palmer mother Meghan Barnett donated her placenta after a C-section to help support tissue and eye transplants during National Donate Life Month, and Life Alaska Donor Services said the donation process is simple and can aid in healing wounds from burns and ulcers plus over 100,000 people nationally and more than 150 Alaskans are on the transplant waitlist. Barnett noted that donating this organ, normally discarded as waste, offers a chance to help others in need.  Alaska's News Source
