COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City officials in East Anchorage are inviting residents to share input on a long-term redevelopment plan for Muldoon — a project funded by a $1 million EPA grant aimed at identifying priority sites and improving community spaces. BUSINESS NEWS

  • GCI announced Wednesday morning that it agreed to acquire Alaska-based fiber provider Quintillion for $310 million. The company said the purchase will expand its statewide fiber network.  Alaska's News Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Anchorage School Board approved a revised 2026-27 calendar that resets the first day of school to Aug. 19 after parent complaints (earlier changes had shifted the start date) and moved three extra instructional days to the final quarter.  Alaska's News Source

  • UAA ecologist urged Anchorage residents on Earth Day yesterday to view themselves as scientists and take simple, informed steps to guard our local environment. The call highlighted how every person can help protect Alaska's natural resources.  Alaska's News Source
  • NOAA scientists revealed that the golden orb found in the Gulf of Alaska in 2023 is a remnant of cells from the base of a deep-sea anemone (Relicanthus daphneae), determined after multi-year DNA and deep-sea research.  Alaska's News Source
  • American Rivers named the Chilkat River in Haines one of the nation’s most endangered rivers for a third time, citing a proposed mining project near its watershed as the main threat—permit review in the coming year could affect vital salmon runs and subsistence for local communities.  Alaska Public Media

  • Residents saw nearly 80 mobility projects at the Anchorage Transportation Fair held Wednesday at the Alaska Airlines Center.   • Alaska has been awarded $115,410,041 in federal funds by the U.S. Maritime Administration to boost port infrastructure under the Port Infrastructure Development Program.
