COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local officials launched Work Zone Awareness Week (a campaign to boost safety in construction zones) to remind drivers in Anchorage to follow posted detours and speed limits. The initiative aims to reduce risks so everyone can get home safely.  Alaska's News Source
  • A food program that sent over 72,000 boxes since late 2025 will end this summer when the $4 million funding expires in June. The Food Bank of Alaska, with 150 partners & local groups, may face challenges if new funding is not secured soon.  Alaska Public Media

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Ariean Fabrizio Colton was attacked by a bear near her new Kenai home on Aug. 26, 2025, suffering severe injuries that required multiple surgeries and therapy, and she now documents her recovery on Instagram under Ariean's 101st Yard to inspire others.  Alaska's News Source

  • A new guide details over 50 breweries, distilleries, meaderies and cideries in Alaska, covering Anchorage tasting rooms and remote craft spots in Talkeetna, Kodiak and more. It helps locals discover unique brews and plan visits to these artisan beverage hubs.  Anchorage Daily News

  • Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is now the top cargo hub in America and ranks third globally; officials say the ranking confirms Anchorage's growing role in international trade + air freight movement.  Your Alaska Link

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Approximately 150 Alaskans joined the annual Alaskans on the Hill event last week at the U.S. Capitol, urging Congress to reform federal permitting and boost support for local industries (oil, fisheries, tourism, and mining).  Alaska Public Media
  • The Agriculture Department announced on April 15 that it had opened its first Office of Seafood to help fishermen access USDA programs; Alaska senators and fishing advocates said the office treats fishermen like farmers, offering benefits such as crop insurance + low interest loans.  Alaska Public Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • The application period is open for rural Alaska students to receive 10 meals a week through the Meals To You program if families meet requirements (at least one child is in a participating school and the household is in a designated rural area) until April 30.  Alaska Public Media

SPORTS NEWS

  • Eagle River’s Rylan Kirby, 17, claimed first place among the male 16-17 group in the 2026 CrossFit Open out of over 1,000 global participants. His coach said he is one step away from qualifying for the CrossFit Games this summer (a first for an Alaskan), as he continues to build on his debut success.  Alaska's News Source
