COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Anchorage Animal Care and Control launched the Tails on Trails program a few weeks ago to give shelter dogs outdoor adventures and more social time (over 100 applications have been received). Volunteers can check out a dog for up to 48 hours for hikes, beach walks, or quiet movie nights at home.  Alaska's News Source

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Anchorage Pel’Meni—a downtown late-night dumpling spot—sustained severe damage after a truck hit its building at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday, leaving one wall down and decorative lights dangling while staff began clean-up and plan to rebuild.  Alaska's News Source
  • On Saturday, April 19, a fire broke out in a three-story multi-plex on Blackberry St that displaced multiple people; the blaze was contained shortly before 11 p.m. — no injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation.  Alaska's News Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • An old advertisement from 1931 featured grape bricks—pressed, concentrated grape juice that consumers mixed with water to make a legal drink during Prohibition—explaining how Anchorage residents once adapted to dry laws with a creative product. Local historian David Reamer details how these 'wine bricks' faded away when new alcohol laws returned legal beverages.  Anchorage Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Last month, Alaska Gov Mike Dunleavy went to Taiwan to pitch his state's LNG project and meet with Taiwanese leaders including President Lai Ching-te—China said the trip sent a wrong signal to Taiwan independence forces. Dunleavy said he will not be pushed around and his trip is part of a push to bring more investment even though the project still faces many uncertainties.  Anchorage Daily News
  • U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan and Rep. Nick Begich raised about $800,000 each in the first three months as they build funds for 2026 elections. The campaign finance reports show large PAC transfers and strong out-of-state support that may boost their future campaigns.  Anchorage Daily News

  • The Anchorage Wolverines swept the Fairbanks Ice Dogs in a weekend playoff series with important goals from forward Cole Christian & key saves from goalie Michael Manzi, and they will return home to try and clinch their best-of-five series at Sullivan Arena this Friday or Saturday.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Kari Gibbons became the only woman to complete the 1,000-mile trek on foot during the Iditarod Trail Invitational, finishing the race in 27 days—she joined forces with Petr Ineman who has now competed in all three race categories. Ineman said he will skip next year’s race while Gibbons, after taking a break, plans to return to the challenge.  Anchorage Daily News
