Good morning, Anchorage. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 16th of April.

CULTURE NEWS

  • On April 7, the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage brought Haines seal hunter Tim Ackerman to show food staff how to break down a whole seal using a sharpened piece of volcanic glass—teaching them the traditional way to prepare the meat for patient meals. This lesson passes down key cultural knowledge and supports the hospital's use of locally sourced, healthy subsistence foods.  Anchorage Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Alaska said four international students have had their visas revoked amid a federal crackdown—one of them is recent graduate Jean Kashikov who works as a flight instructor in Wasilla and received a termination notice for his SEVIS record. Kashikov said he will likely leave the country if no solution is found and experts say these actions do not follow proper procedures.  Alaska Public Media
  • Gruening and Mirror Lake Middle School band students premiered an original composition based on the Inuit legend of Qalupalik Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Chugiak — the piece was commissioned by Gruening band director Philip Walters from composer Brian Balmages and featured three of his earlier works.  Alaska Public Media

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Alaska Wildlife Alliance filed an application for a temporary restraining order to block state officials from starting a predator control program in late spring that aims to boost the dwindling Mulchatna Caribou Herd. A state judge ruled on March 14 that the program violates the constitution — however, the Alaska Board of Game approved an emergency petition on March 27 to resume the plan.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Residents in Anchorage may see rare snow rollers in open fields or on hills when an iced-over layer of snow is topped with fresh, wet snow and aided by winds (25 to 30 mph) and near-freezing temperatures. The National Weather Service explains that gravity on hills kick-starts the rolling process, making this natural phenomenon a unique winter sight.  Alaska's News Source
  • UAF researchers studied 34 spotted seal stomachs collected from the Bering and Chukchi seas and found microplastics in all but one; their analysis using enzymes showed that even remote Arctic areas are affected by synthetic particle pollution. The study (published April 15) suggests that seals feeding on higher-trophic-level prey tend to ingest more plastics, which may impact local subsistence communities.  KBRW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Congressman Nick Begich raised $2.8 million in the first quarter for his 2024 campaign and got over $824,279 from 21,644 donors at an average of $38 each — breaking the record set in 2023 by former Rep. Mary Peltola. This strong start signals a tough contest ahead.  Must Read Alaska
  • On Monday, NORAD tracked a Russian military aircraft in the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone — the aircraft stayed in international airspace and did not enter U.S. or Canadian sovereign territory.  Alaska's News Source
  • The Alaska Legislature is debating operating and capital budgets while the state negotiates with the General Government Unit—representing over 10,000 employees—as the current contract set to expire on June 30 faces new union proposals. The union’s proposals for increased health insurance costs and cost-of-living adjustments may add hundreds of millions in expenses over three years, but the state has offered modest increases based on the CPI-U as negotiations continue.  Must Read Alaska
