COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Alaska Tire Service is encouraging drivers to switch from studded to summer tires as spring begins; communities south of the 60° north line must meet the April 14 deadline while Anchorage and areas north have until April 30 — so drivers are urged to call early for service.  Alaska's News Source
  • West High School students packed 200 lunches for a local homeless shelter on Apr. 14, showing hands-on community service in action. Their effort brought meals to those in need and highlighted the school's commitment to supporting local families.  Alaska's News Source
  • Studded tire changeover deadlines are here as Anchorage shops start switching tires; drivers (to stay safe this winter) are urged to call early for service before the deadlines pass.  Alaska's News Source

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • DOT temporarily diverted traffic on Seward Highway after a rock fall on Monday near milepost 113 damaged a vehicle. Crews will continue monitoring the highway during the spring thaw for additional ice and rock falls.  Alaska's News Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • UAA Opera Ensemble presents the classic Magic Flute reimagined as a virtual reality videogame on Saturday, Apr. 18 and Sunday, Apr. 19 at 4 and 7:30 p.m. at the UAA Recital Hall. The family-friendly show features a woodwind trio (with piano) and performers drawn from local schools and community groups.  KBRW
  • The Alaska Native Artist Market opens today at the Dena’ina Civic and Convention Center during the Arctic Encounter Summit in downtown Anchorage and runs until Sunday, Apr. 18 — local Native artists will showcase handmade jewelry, carvings, clothing and artwork.  Your Alaska Link

  • Due to long government delays in renewing work documents, many Ukrainians in Anchorage are leaving for areas like Seattle where they can work. Local officials have urged faster processing to keep these families in the community + support local jobs.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Senator Sullivan hosted Anchorage roundtables in 2023 with the Surgeon General and local health experts to address rising teen mental health issues linked to social media use.
