EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Anchorage School Board approved a fall calendar change starting classes a week early with grades 1-6 and 9 on Thursday, Aug. 13 and grades 7-8 and 10-12 on Friday, Aug. 14. The new schedule, due to a teacher contract adding extra class days, will last three school years.  Alaska's News Source
  • Palmer's Colony High School Norther Knights Robotics won the First Robotics Competition regional championship on April 4, marking the first time an Alaskan team earned the title. Their win highlights a boost for local educational achievements.  Alaska's News Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Delayed work authorization renewals have forced Ukrainians in Anchorage to leave, with local advocates reporting at least a hundred families moving to secure employment. Government and community leaders are urging federal action to prevent further workforce disruptions & hardships for those affected.  KTOO
  • The Coast Guard seized $65,000 of pollock roe from American Seafoods’ vessel (Northern Eagle) near Dutch Harbor in late March after discrepancies in catch records led to an investigation, and the company said the issue was a paperwork error rather than a hidden catch.  Alaska Public Media

  • On Monday, Apr. 13, UAA named former standout Morgan Hooe as its new head volleyball coach — she plans to build on last season’s success and nurture home-grown talent from local high schools and clubs.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Chugiak High School running stars Hannah Shaha and Petra Knox signed with college squads on Apr. 13, marking a new chapter in their athletic careers. The move (underscoring local talent) sets them up for collegiate competitions this season.  Alaska's News Source
  • Anchorage’s David Carle led Denver University to its third national college hockey title on Saturday (April 11) at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, and South High soccer teams stayed undefeated with Cook Inlet Conference wins last week.  Anchorage Daily News
