CRIME NEWS

  • A woman who was shot before 8:30 a.m. Thursday at 5100 Mountain View Drive in Anchorage died later that day from her injuries and police described the homicide as isolated—no suspect information has been released as investigators continue their work.  Anchorage Daily News

  • Anchorage offers a busy weekend with events such as Puddles Pity Party at Discovery Theatre Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. with tickets starting at $48.50 and the Merry Marmot Festival at Arctic Valley Ski Area Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Other events include the Anchorage Home Show at Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Cinderella by Anchorage Ballet at Sydney Laurence Theatre Saturday at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., a free community dinner art project at The Nave Saturday from 2 to 7:30 p.m., the STAR Masquerade Ball at Marriott Anchorage Downtown Saturday at 6 p.m., Hadestown: Teen Edition at Atwood Concert Hall Saturday at 7 p.m., and a Spring Bunny Hop at Bear Tooth Theatrepub Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.—ticket prices range from $10 to $48.50.  Anchorage Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, the Alaska Senate is voting on a bill to boost funding for public schools by adding $1,000 per student, but Gov. Mike Dunleavy has vowed to veto it if it remains unchanged. Lawmakers say the measure will add $253 million each year to K-12 schools—though they currently do not have enough votes to override a veto.  Alaska Beacon

  • Anchorage residents have prepared protective gear after scientists warned that Mount Spurr, located about 80 miles west, may erupt soon and send ash clouds into the city—residents bought KN95 masks, tape, and air filters for personal protection while dog owners like Alliana Salanguit and Jesslin Wooliver secured masks, booties, and goggles for pets—and city officials advise keeping animals indoors during the ash fallout.  Alaska Public Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Dunleavy administration filed a motion in a federal case that seeks an order to stop all actions from the federal approval of the Chin’an Gaming Hall near Birchwood Airport. The Native Village of Eklutna said the hall, which opened in January, brings jobs and helps the tribe make money—oral arguments on the case will be held on April 28.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Anchorage launched its '10,000 Homes in Ten Years' plan to boost housing by offering tax incentives, streamlined permitting with new software, and $5M in federal funds—local developers are preparing designs to meet the city's growing need for affordable homes.  Your Alaska Link
  • Anchorage state senator Löki Tobin proposed a bill to expand Alaska’s Board of Parole from five to seven members by adding seats for health care, victim advocacy and addiction recovery experts to address low parole approval rates and a lack of transparency in parole decisions.
