COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Anchorage launched Willow Commons, a program that pairs tiny homes with addiction treatment for residents without stable housing. The city used opioid settlement funds to build 32 microunits, and Anchorage Recovery Center offers therapy, case management and life skills to support recovery.  Alaska Public Media

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A state report showed metals mining generated a $4 billion industry in 2024, contributing 3–4% of GDP with 3,533 mining jobs. Nearly half of these positions were held by nonresidents (mirroring trends in oil and gas) and future projects remain in early planning phases.  Anchorage Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • School leaders testified on Mar. 30 at the state Capitol about teacher shortages, budget gaps, and aging facilities across 53 districts. Officials said even a historic funding raise has not kept pace with rising costs and urged lawmakers to secure additional funding for education.  Alaska Public Media
  • Two school funding propositions are trailing by less than 1% and half a percent respectively; Proposition 9 would raise $12 million with a new tax levy for teacher positions while Proposition 1 would support building improvements, and additional ballots will be counted ahead of certification on Apr. 28.  Alaska Public Media

  • Anchorage Fire Department introduced its new fire truck (Truck #1) today, boosting its emergency response capabilities. Officials say the vehicle will support faster action in community emergencies.  Alaska's News Source
