CRIME NEWS

  • The Coast Guard seized over $65K in unreported pollock roe from the Northern Eagle near Dutch Harbor on March 26 after a pre-boarding audit revealed major discrepancies in the vessel’s production logs.  Alaska's News Source

  • A video shows the world’s first wingsuit skydive under Alaska’s northern lights while cleanup crews finished clearing The Beast. Morning Edition Extra highlighted Hilltop Ski Area’s Easter events that took place recently.  Alaska's News Source

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A report from the Department of Labor and Workforce Development shows Alaska’s metals mining industry, worth $4 billion a year, accounts for 3 to 4% of GDP and supports 3,533 jobs, with 56% of hires being nonresidents (a trend shared by oil and gas) and future projects on horizon.  Alaska Public Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Anchorage School District will shift Campbell STEM’s accreditation to Klatt Elementary next school year and pause further closures while finalizing a long-range consolidation plan, with a survey planned for interested families (in an effort to preserve the STEM program).  Alaska's News Source

  • On Monday, Alaska Wildlife Alliance and the Center for Biological Diversity filed an emergency motion in Superior Court to block a state predator-control program that could allow unlimited killing of brown and black bears across 40,000 square miles this summer, arguing the plan lacks scientific support.  Alaska's News Source
  • The Anchorage Fire Department placed a new fire truck in service at Station 1 downtown after a Monday push-in ceremony designed to modernize its aging fleet, and the updated truck is now ready for emergency response across Anchorage.  Your Alaska Link

  • Brushkana musher Jessie Holmes repeated his win in the Kobuk 440 sled dog race on Sunday by finishing in 45 hours and 41 minutes, arriving in Kotzebue at 6:11 a.m. — his win follows his second straight Iditarod victory 19 days earlier.  Alaska's News Source
  • UAA head hockey coach Matt Shasby resigned effective immediately after completing four seasons with a 34-86-9 record. The university said it would begin a search for a new coach — a move that builds on his deep local ties.  Anchorage Daily News
