COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hilltop Ski Area is set for a festive Easter weekend with a Toyota Sink or Skim event today from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and an egg hunt on Sunday at noon — organizers will hide 3,000 eggs, including three golden eggs with ski passes and prizes, and host a 'Party Animal' costume contest nearby.  Alaska's News Source

  • Fire Island Rustic Bakeshop and chef Nathan Bentley of Altura Bistro have been named finalists for the James Beard Awards — one of the top praises in the culinary field. Winners will be announced in Chicago on June 16.  Your Alaska Link
  • Yesterday, hundreds of Catholics from seven parishes, including a group from JBER, participated in the long-held Good Friday Faith Walk, stopping at stations of the cross before ending at the Performing Arts Center in downtown. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Three major shipping companies are raising fuel surcharges this month due to rising fuel prices from global oil supply issues. Alaska Marine Lines will increase its surcharge from 11%-to-18.5%, while Matson and Tote Maritime also raise rates for southeast communities and Anchorage, affecting local businesses.  Alaska Public Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Alaska staff voted in favor of forming a union with 64% supporting the measure; certification from the Labor Relations Agency is expected on April 8. The union, CAUSE-UAW, will represent over 2,300 employees during upcoming contract negotiations (current wage policies remain unchanged until a new agreement is reached).  Alaska Public Media

  • Anchorage roads are wet on Friday as warm temperatures quickly melt record snow, causing large puddles and potholes. Residents are advised to call Anchorage Public Works at 907+343+8277 or Eagle River street maintenance at 907+343+1510 if they spot issues.  Alaska's News Source
  • State regulators proposed to remove the impaired-water label from 11 beach assessment units affected by the Exxon Valdez spill (using updated methods) even as oil remains inches beneath some beaches.   • Anchorage was named a national IMBA Trail Town on March 31 because of its strong commitment to more than 120 miles of paved trails and 50 miles of bike paths. The award will support future partnerships to boost local outdoor recreation.  Alaska Public Media

  • Mary Peltola criticized lawmakers for trading stocks & said current policies favor wealthy elites, drawing comparisons to both progressive and conservative reforms.
