EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Wednesday, the Alaska Senate Education Committee advanced House Bill 69 that raises school funding by $1,000 per student and sets new class size limits (23 students for prekindergarten to sixth grade and 30 for grades 7 to 12) to address overcrowding. - ➤ Alpha Aviation and Alaska Helicopter Tours offer a 90-minute Spurr Tour that departs from Merrill Field Airport and climbs above 11,000 feet to bring riders close to the steaming volcano. - ➤ The Alaska House voted 32—8 on Wednesday to let 18-year-olds serve alcohol in restaurants, breweries, distilleries, wineries, hotels, lodges and resorts while keeping the limit at 21 for bars and venues with adult entertainment. - ➤ An Alaska House panel advanced a draft budget on April 3 that includes a full Permanent Fund dividend and a $1.9 billion deficit after more than a week of heated debates—if passed, eligible residents would get about $3,900. The bill now awaits a full House vote before moving to the Senate while a supplemental budget to cover extra spending failed to secure the needed savings draw. Anchorage Daily News
- ➤ The Alaska Legislature passed Senate Bill 15 on Wednesday to let teenagers as young as 18 serve alcohol in restaurants, breweries, wineries, distilleries and resorts—bars and package stores still require servers to be 21.
