ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Anchorage police reported that 54-year-old Eric Black died after being hit by a vehicle Friday night on Glenn Highway near Boniface Parkway—this marks the city's fifth pedestrian fatality this year as the driver cooperates with investigators.  Your Alaska Link
  • A Kenai pilot with a student certificate—prohibiting him from carrying passengers—was rescued along with two children near Tustumena Lake after his plane was mostly submerged in icy water, and the FAA is investigating him as he may face disciplinary action and be responsible for cleaning up the wreck on his own.  Alaska Public Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Anchorage voters cast ballots today at 7:00 a.m. in a municipal election featuring 11 propositions—ranging from bonds for schools and roads to public safety and park upgrades—and several candidate races; polling places will accept votes until 8:00 p.m.  Your Alaska Link
  • Anchorage residents who plan to fly after May 7 must get a REAL ID to board flights and enter military bases. The Alaska DMV has issued over 350,000 REAL IDs since January and uses mobile units to serve remote communities (helping residents in rural areas).  KTOO
  • The Alaska Legislature is considering Senate Joint Resolution 12 that will ask Congress to restore funding for NOAA's weather buoys to keep mariners safe in Prince William Sound. The resolution, sponsored by Sen. Forrest Dunbar, notes that seven of 27 buoys are out of service, including the Seal Rocks buoy (which operated only 35 days in the past year-and-a-half), and warns that this could put tanker traffic at risk.  Alaska Beacon

  • Colony Knights girls basketball team defeated Wasilla 44 to 41 to win their first state championship since 2008 and mend the sting of last season's loss. Seniors Hallie Clark and Tonya Karpow led the win—Clark earned Alaska's Player of the Year title while Karpow made the clutch free throws.  Alaska's News Source
