COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bean’s Cafe is hosting the George Hieronymus Empty Bowl Project at the Dena’ina Civic and Convention Center on Saturday, Mar. 28 to deliver an extra 5,000 meals in the coming months + help address local hunger.  Alaska's News Source
  • Skiku is training its first local ski coach, Justin River Lechton, to lead kids next winter in Holy Cross and nearby lower Yukon communities. The nonprofit is expanding its community-driven skiing program with support from the Interior tribal consortium (Tanana Chiefs Conference) as it works to keep traditions alive.  Alaska Public Media
  • Cheney Lake Park was named 2026 Park of the Year by Anchorage residents, and a new painting honoring the park has been unveiled. The city will invest in shoreline restoration and youth employment programs at the park this summer.  Your Alaska Link

  • James Dommek Jr. will present Iñupiaq storytelling in a modern style on Thursday, April 9 at 7 p.m. in the Anchorage Museum auditorium (in conjunction with the exhibit Tricksters and Sourdoughs: Humor and Identity in Alaska) as a free event with recommended registration.  Your Alaska Link

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Thursday, the University of Alaska system raised over $1.1 million in 49 hours during its sixth annual Giving Day, breaking records with 3,700 donors+supporting scholarship and emergency funds. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A federal appeals court reinstated protections for ringed and bearded seals on Wednesday—confirming nearly 160 million acres of critical habitat that still requires review of federal permits. The decision preserves the space needed by these species that depend on sea ice as federal permits are reviewed.  Alaska's News Source
  • Scientists linked algal toxins to fur seal die-offs on the Pribilof Islands in August 2024 and 2025 — a sign that warming waters are bringing harmful blooms north, which could affect the marine ecosystem that local residents depend on.  Alaska Beacon

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • This summer, the DOT will upgrade Anchorage streets with new traffic signals and a raised median on Tudor Road—measures aimed at reducing turning accidents and enhancing safety for pedestrians. The projects may affect traffic near Patterson Street.  Your Alaska Link
  • Anchorage Assembly is asking the Legislature for $30 million to upgrade infrastructure at over two dozen sites, including the former Carrs-Safeway on Gambell Street, to spur new housing projects.   • Anchorage doctor aged 73 ran the Boston Marathon to honor family members lost to cancer & raise awareness. He dedicated his return to the race as a tribute to their lives and a call for greater cancer support.  Alaska's News Source

  • Anchorage doctor Thomas McCarty, 73, is preparing for the Boston Marathon on Monday, April 20 by training on local bike trails to honor his family and raise funds for cancer research.
