  • Downtown Hope Center plans to buy Plaza 201—located across the street from its shelter and soup kitchen—to expand its vocational training for those overcoming homelessness or incarceration.   • Jersey Mike’s on 88th Avenue in South Anchorage donated 100% of its sales on Wednesday, March 25, to Special Olympics Alaska — the funds will cover travel, lodging, and meals for 27 athletes heading to the USA Games in Minnesota on June 20.  Your Alaska Link

  • Alaska author Ch’igiioonta She Holds a Child released a book that explores the displacement of the Nendaaghe Dena people by telling family stories, mapping precolonial ties, and detailing cultural shifts in the Western Brooks Range area.  Alaska Beacon

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday, Mar. 25, a federal appeals court reinstated nearly 160 million acres of critical habitat for ringed and bearded seals along Alaska’s northern coast, upholding the 2022 decision by NOAA (National Marine Fisheries Service) despite state objections over oil development.  Alaska Beacon

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • In 2025, Alaska received $145 million from the federal government to boost aviation safety. The funding from the FAA Reauthorization Act and the Working Families Tax Cuts Act was used for weather infrastructure and new observing systems to reduce accident rates.  Must Read Alaska
  • The Alaska DOT is piloting new infrasound and sensor+drone technology along Seward Highway near Bird Point and on Thane Road to detect avalanches and reduce dangerous road closures. The project, funded by a $1.1M federal grant, will improve safety for drivers and crews during heavy snowfall.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Anchorage Assembly approved the $604.5 million school district budget on Tuesday with a 7 to 5 vote that includes closing three elementary schools—among them Campbell STEM—as part of a cost-saving measure. HEALTH NEWS

  • The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will launch a new digital health record system at the Alaska VA Healthcare System on Oct. 24 in Anchorage, making it easier for providers to access veteran records.
