COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A collection of 25 Alaskans was honored at the annual Red Cross Real Heroes Ceremony in Anchorage on March 25th. The awards were presented at the Discovery Theater—located at the Alaska Performing Arts Center—and recognized local heroes for courageous actions during fires, floods and blizzards.  Alaska's News Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents recall the 1992 eruption of Mount Spurr that blanketed Anchorage with ash and made driving and caring for vehicles difficult. With unrest at the volcano continuing, community organizations like Covenant House Alaska are preparing to supply shelter and essentials during future events—lessons from the past guiding today’s efforts.  Your Alaska Link
  • From March 24, research rockets launched intermittently from Poker Flat Research Range to study how auroras affected the upper atmosphere in a NASA experiment called AWESOME. Spectators across the Interior saw rockets leave glowing, multi-colored vapor trails, and the final launch will occur on April 6 if weather permits & scientists hope the study will improve space weather forecasts.  KTOO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal judge in Anchorage ruled in favor of the state-owned investment bank in a lawsuit claiming the Interior Department canceled oil and gas leases in Arctic National Wildlife Refuge without a court order— the ruling clears the way for AIDEA to conduct seismic testing and plan future oil drilling. State officials said the decision sets the stage for further development on the coastal plain.  Alaska's News Source
  • The Alaska Department of Transportation has released a draft 20-year ferry plan that calls for building new hybrid ferries, hiring more workers, and upgrading ports to restore reliable service at a cost of about $3 billion (funding will come from state and federal sources plus ridership profits). Public comment on the plan will be accepted until March 30th.  KTOO
  • Anchorage municipal elections are one week away and three in-person vote centers—City Hall, Loussac Library, and Eagle River Town Center—are open to help registered voters check ballot status, request replacement ballots, and update their address. The centers will operate weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and on election day from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.  Your Alaska Link

  • Three Special Olympians from Anchorage, Wasilla, and Fairbanks earned medals at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, Italy on March 21—Sulynnette Vega-Ledesma won gold in snowboarding, Nathaniel Hunt earned gold and silver in alpine skiing, and Teagan Lockwood took bronze in skiing.  Anchorage Daily News
