COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tribal members in Kipnuk voted to relocate after Typhoon Halong devastated their community. Over 92% of adult voters chose an inland site near Cicing plus two-thirds picked the option owned by Chefornak’s village corporation, and leader Daniel Paul said the move will be gradual as plans are made.  Alaska Public Media

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Alaska increased by about $1 over the past month; AAA reported the current average for regular gas is $4.52 compared to $3.56 last month.  Alaska's News Source
  • Today, Alaska officials may use part of the $545 million oil revenue to invest in the Renewable Energy Fund (a grant program that helps rural communities use wind, solar and hydro to lower energy costs) for long term price stability.  Alaska Beacon

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At the State Capitol, Toksook Bay youth and advocates spoke on Mar. 19 to urge the passage of two bills that would add a $0.98 monthly phone surcharge to fund the 988 crisis lifeline and related mental health services, addressing Alaska’s high suicide rates.  Alaska Beacon
  • The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities is installing a new avalanche alert system on the Seward Highway to use intelligent sensors and truck-mounted controls to monitor snowpack stability — efforts that will benefit travelers between Anchorage and Seward.  Your Alaska Link
  • The Department of Transportation will host an open house Wednesday at Seedlab to present barrier options for 5th Avenue safety, with the chosen design slated for installation next year ($3 to $4 million). SPORTS NEWS

  • On March 17, the 54th Iditarod concluded in Nome with 29 mushers sharing a $650,000 purse. Champion Jessie Holmes won his second title with $80,700 and extra awards—art, gold, a banquet—given during the ceremony at Nome’s recreation center.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Local athletes shined last week—UAA’s record-setting track meet in San Francisco and a strong Cedar City gymnastics finish propelled the Anchorage Wolverines sweeping Kenai River Brown Bears and Jeremy Swayman’s standout wins with the Bruins.   • The Iditarod race ended Sunday evening in Nome, where an awards banquet honored mushers and their dogs. Winner Jessie Holmes received multiple awards, including first to McGrath and over $80,000 in prizes, while $650,000 was given to all 29 finishers + the event celebrated Alaska’s rich mushing tradition.  Alaska's News Source
  • During the 2026 Iditarod race, Mille Porsild had to withdraw after her four-year-old sled dog Charley died just before reaching the Elim checkpoint. The necropsy was inconclusive and an independent Dog Care Panel will review the case in 30 days.  Your Alaska Link
