COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Anchorage residents and postal workers rallied at the corner of Northern Lights Blvd.—Seward Highway to support USPS amid concerns that proposed changes could end universal mail delivery in rural areas, with about 200 people holding signs against transferring control to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.  Alaska's News Source
  • At his South Anchorage home in mid-March, beekeeper Tim Huffman removed snow from his polystyrene hives to find dozens of active bees inside — his method, which includes early feeding and mite treatment, has led more local beekeepers to try overwintering their colonies.  Anchorage Daily News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Bun Ice Cream Parlor opened on Feb. 9, 1969 at a shopping center near Northern Lights Boulevard and C Street with plans to become a chain called Alaskaland. New owners later changed the name and began offering franchises in Pennsylvania, but the expansion failed and the Anchorage shop closed in the mid-1970s—leaving a fond memory among locals.  Anchorage Daily News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Marnie Kaler—a local crafter—taught a class downtown on the Ukrainian art of Pysanky where participants learned the traditional way to decorate eggs. She plans to open a small craft store soon to offer more classes as local resources shrink after Joann Crafts closes.  Alaska's News Source

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gold now sells for over $3,000 an ounce—up about 35% from early 2024—and this boost brings higher profits for both major mines like Kinross at Fort Knox and small placer operations; mining companies expect increased production and revenue as the season unfolds.  Anchorage Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Public employee unions contributed $35,500 to candidates for the Assembly and School Board as of March 1—showing their role ahead of the April 1 municipal election. The next financial disclosure is due March 25—offering further insight into union funding.  Must Read Alaska

  • At the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday, March 22, the Colony girls basketball team won the state title when Tonya Karpow sank two late free throws to beat Wasilla 44-41—she scored a game-high 20 points.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Bettye Davis East won its third straight 4A state championship by beating Ketchikan 43-25 on Saturday, March 22. The Thunderbirds used a strong defense to claim four titles in the last five years, led by senior Muhammed Sabally and coach Chuck Martin.  Anchorage Daily News
