ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The NTSB said the Bering Air Cessna Caravan, which crashed near Nome on Feb. 6 (killing 10 people), was (969 pounds) overweight, and investigators are reviewing flight data to determine if the extra weight contributed to the crash.  KTOO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fifteen Scenic Park Elementary students visited Chester Valley Veterinary Hospital after reading hard during the school read-a-thon that raised about $7,000 for new library books. The event let kids spend up to five hours reading each day and meeting puppies + hospital staff plan to offer more similar experiences.  Your Alaska Link

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Scientists at the Alaska Volcano Observatory said Mount Spurr shows four eruption signals—recent quakes, surface expansion, melting snow and high gas levels—and may erupt in weeks or months. Anchorage residents should stay informed as rising alert levels could bring ashfall that affects both air quality and daily travel.  Alaska Public Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Anchorage Assembly Members voted 8-4 Tuesday to postpone a proposal that would have placed a 3% sales tax before voters in a special election—tentatively scheduled for Sept. 2.  Alaska's News Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • Natasha Singh, the new president of the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, said the group is seeking ownership of the hospital by year-end to expand services since Indian Health Service ownership has limited improvements. The board opened Phase 1 of a $250 million emergency department expansion with 18 new rooms on March 6—plans for further phases and a $69 million nursing facility are also in progress to meet growing care needs.  Anchorage Daily News
  • On March 19, more than 150 supporters gathered at the Capitol to demand better services and rights for people with disabilities — pressing for protected Medicaid benefits, shortened waitlists, and improved early learning programs. Organized by the Key Coalition during its 38th annual fly-in advocacy week, attendees chanted 'We are done waiting' as they called for real change.  Alaska Beacon
