Good morning, Anchorage. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 19th of March.

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Decades-old fishing rules from the 1970s have shrunk Native villages' fleets — leaving places like Angoon to rely more on government help. Local researchers and leaders now call for changes in the permit system so Native fishers can access commercial fishing without risking financial ruin.  Alaska Public Media

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials moved the start of wildfire season to March 17 from April 1 because dry conditions persisted despite recent snow. • The Alaska House of Representatives voted 33—6 to send a measure to the Senate asking Congress to keep the Universal Service Fund that subsidizes phone and internet service for rural schools, clinics, and households in Alaska after its legality was challenged in court.
