CRIME NEWS

  • Wasilla police fatally shot 34-year-old Brett George on Sunday after he fired his assault rifle at an officer’s vehicle during a domestic call in Settlers Bay—he had threatened relatives and worn body armor before the chase, and no one else was injured.  Alaska Public Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Anchorage Superior Court judge Andrew Guidi ruled on Friday that the state's bear-killing program violated due process because the Board of Game changed its notice — an action that halted the effort to aid a declining caribou herd. The state is now reviewing the ruling and will decide its next steps.  Alaska Public Media
  • Yarrow Silvers, a District 5 candidate and veteran environmental scientist, political writer and legislative aide, said she is running for Anchorage Assembly to bring an independent voice to East Anchorage and address a local housing crisis. She will work with city planners and community stakeholders—promising to build sustainable solutions and strengthen local governance as voters head to the polls on April 1.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Alaska’s senators reintroduced legislation to add $75 million over ten years to upgrade volcano monitoring as experts watch Mount Spurr just west of Anchorage amid concerns that 141 active volcanoes pose real threats (the bill aims to boost USGS early warning systems and protect local communities).  Alaska's News Source

SPORTS NEWS

  • Jessie Holmes won his first Iditarod Sled Dog Race on March 14th when his team of sled dogs, including Polar, Arctic, and Hercules, guided him over 1,100 miles in just over 10 days. Holmes credited his win to the teamwork of the dogs—even young pups played a key role—in a race that marked a historic milestone in his career.  Alaska's News Source
  • The final competitor in the 53rd Iditarod, rookie Ebbe Pedersen (from Norway) reached Nome early Monday morning and earned the Red Lantern award after Fairbanks rookie Jenny Roddewig scratched at White Mountain. The nearly 14-day race covered 1,128 miles and saw a third of the teams fail to finish (including nine scratchers and two withdrawals) while also recognizing awards for standout mushers.  Alaska's News Source
  • This past week at the Alaska Airlines Center, high school teams from small communities clinched state championships—Fort Yukon girls defended their 1A title with a 37-33 win, Unalakleet boys rallied to secure their first 2A crown since 1996, and Seward girls ended a 27-year drought with a 51-29 victory. At college events, the UAA women’s team fell 63-61 in the West Regional after a late surge and sprinter Joshua Caleb earned All-American honors at nationals—joining several standout performances from Alaska athletes.  Anchorage Daily News
