  • On Saturday, hundreds gathered at Teeland Middle School to remember Wasilla resident Skye Rench, an Iron Dog racer who went missing early this March in an ATV accident when the ice broke. Family and friends later shared memories at a dinner—his fiancée and mother recalled his adventurous spirit and deep love for Alaska.  Alaska's News Source
  • Domestic violence nonprofits in Alaska said they may have to close shelters and cut key programs this summer if federal grants are not restored — leaders warn that some groups could make hard funding decisions by April or May as many count on these grants for more than half of their support.  Anchorage Daily News

  • Local ski rental shops saw a rise in business over the weekend after an unexpected snowfall and spring break. Manager Jordan Frey of Hoarding Marmot said many customers are storing their winter gear — though backcountry skiers still have a chance for runs until May — as local winter sports face a slow start.  Alaska's News Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • A local collector has consigned a caramel-colored skull of an ancient cave bear, believed to be at least 60,000 years old, to Alaska Auction Company in Anchorage. The auction runs until March 20th and the skull—measuring 23 inches and valued near $30,000—has drawn high online interest and private viewings.  Alaska's News Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Gardeners at the Anchorage Botanical Garden gathered over the weekend to swap lightly used tools and seeds and get ready for the season. Organizer Theresa Brown said participants should delay planting until Memorial Day — the ground remains frozen despite recent warm weather.  Alaska's News Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Mike Dunleavy introduced Senate Bill 105 to let eligible residents purchase or lease up to 10 acres of state land for cabin use, with a hearing today at 3:30 pm in Senate Resources. The bill updates rules for remote cabin sites and sets clear steps for appraisals and payments—helping ensure a fair process for Alaskans.  Must Read Alaska
  • Alaska lawmakers are questioning the lack of funds for school repairs after Gov. Dunleavy's budget does not include maintenance spending. Lawmakers blame years of low spending for a growing backlog in rural and state-run schools—further talks are planned to address the issue.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Assemblywoman Meg Zaletel proposed an ordinance that would require posting the land acknowledgement on the Assembly Chambers wall and displaying the American and city flags at Tuesday’s meeting on March 18—this step formalizes the oral recitation already in place.   • Seward’s girls basketball team ended a 27-year state title drought by beating Glennallen 51-29 at the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday, March 15th, 2025—junior Mikinley Williams scored 22 points and helped lead the team in their first season at the 2A level.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Junior Isaac Smith led Unalakleet to a 40-36 comeback win on March 15 at the Alaska Airlines Center—scoring 10 of his team’s 14 fourth-quarter points—to secure the 2A state title for the first time since 1996.
