CRIME NEWS

  • William Farmer, a 36-year-old inmate with schizophrenia, died after a fatal beating in a crowded Anchorage jail cell in December when he was placed with cellmate Lawrence Fenumiai—who now faces first-degree murder charges amid delays in processing his release.  Anchorage Daily News

CULTURE NEWS

  • A 47 foot juvenile fin whale washed ashore in November and has drawn hundreds of visitors on Anchorage mud flats while NOAA warns people to keep away because the mud is dangerous and there is a risk of disease; the Museum in Wasilla plans to remove and catalog its bones in late March using plastic sleds+trucks so the skeleton can be used for an educational display that may take over a year to complete.  Anchorage Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Anchorage bars, restaurants and breweries must now check all customers' IDs when selling alcohol, a law that took effect on March 1 to stop minors and those with restricted licenses from buying drinks. Local owners say the rule creates extra work and delays during busy hours—details that will be closely watched as the tourism season nears.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Anchorage Superior Court Judge Andrew Guidi ruled on Friday that Alaska's plan to kill nearly 200 brown bears to support a declining Mulchatna caribou herd violated due process—temporarily halting the program while state officials review their next steps.  Alaska Beacon

  • Fort Yukon girls had a hard start to their season but won their second straight 1A state basketball title by beating Shaktoolik 37—33 at the UAA Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday, March 15, 2025. They came together in the final quarter to build back a lead after Shaktoolik tied the game in the third.  Anchorage Daily News
  • The UAA women’s basketball team beat Montana State Billings 69—66 on Friday at the Torodome in Carson, California as senior Tori Hollingshead scored a career-high 28 points with 10 rebounds and three blocks. The win advanced the Seawolves to Saturday’s second round to face top seed Cal State Dominguez Hills at 6:30 p.m.—freshman Ashlyn Read added 16 points while senior Jazzpher Evans contributed 11 points.  Anchorage Daily News
  • On Saturday, March 15th, 2025, local high school and college sports teams played close games with Shaktoolik beating Cook Inlet Academy in the state 1A Boys basketball championship at the UAA Alaska Airlines Center — athletes also posted competitive finish times in the Shamrock Shuffle 5K race and other contests. The scoreboard update shows that many events ended with narrow margins and strong local efforts.  Anchorage Daily News
