COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Twelve-year-old Nathan Yuill plans to build over 100 gift baskets for children at Providence and Alaska Native Medical Centers during Easter week. He is undergoing chemotherapy while adding items like coloring books, candy, and stuffed animals to help lift the spirits of young patients.  Alaska's News Source

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Todd Meadows, a deckhand on Deadliest Catch, died on February 25 while fishing off the coast on the Aleutian Lady — his death was announced on Facebook by captain Rick Shelford and his family has set up a GoFundMe to support his three sons.  Alaska's News Source

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Texas investor Gentry Beach plans to develop Polar Eagle on the North Slope using Novatek technology to produce LNG in an environmentally friendly way, with initial output targeted for 2029. The project aims to boost local energy production and job growth without competing with the Alaska LNG megaproject.  Anchorage Daily News

  • Alaskan singer Jewel marked the 31st anniversary of her debut album 'Pieces of You' over the weekend — recalling early struggles that led to her breakthrough, which made the album the tenth best-selling debut in the U.S. Her journey continues to inspire local fans.  Anchorage Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Thomas More Classical School will open on Aug. 19 in Anchorage with about 100 K‑6 students in its classical program that focuses on history and civics. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for July as over 60 applications have already been submitted.  Your Alaska Link

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Carnival cruise ships operating in Alaska waters logged over 750 pollution violation days in 2023 and 2024, officials say significant washwater discharges may threaten local seafood safety (raising concerns among fishermen).  The Alaska Current

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Anchorage officials announced that starting May 31 some invasive species including Bird Cherry, Chokecherry and Knotweed will be banned from sale following an updated ordinance passed in December.   • State lawmakers introduced bills to require cruise ships to use cleaner fuel to reduce water pollution from heavy fuel oil; Sen. Jesse Kiehl’s measure (set for Senate Resources Committee review) and Rep. Sara Hannan’s proposal has been sent to House Transportation and Finance Committees.  Alaska Public Media

  • UAA sophomore Erling Bjornstad became the first Seawolf to win a RMISA title in a decade when he won the 7.5 km classic race on Feb. 27 at Soldier Hollow in Utah (he finished 22 seconds ahead of runner-up Storm Pedersen).  Anchorage Daily News
  • 14-year-old Stanley Robinson won his first Jr. Iditarod race to and from Knik Lake, earning Rookie of the Year honors and setting a new chapter in his family's legacy — his sister Emily, a four-time champion, cheered him on as he plans to return for the 50th race.  Your Alaska Link
